Whether you’re doing it for fun or to learn more about growing mushrooms, this can be an exciting project for the whole family, or the classroom. The goal of this kit is to allow you to see the full life cycle of growing your own mushrooms from the germination of spores to mycelium to mushroom primordia and finally the mature mushrooms.
In the year 1841, a Scottish naturalist was collecting fungus specimens along a remote river bank in Western Australia. He discovered an object that glowed brightly in the dark. The local aborigines expressed great fear when they saw the luminescent fungus. They cried out “chinga,” their word for “spirit.” What they were seeing was ghost fungus. The ghost fungus occurs primarily in southern Australia and also Tasmania. It has also been reported in India. The scientist noticed that when he placed the fungus on a piece of newspaper, the light it emitted was so bright that he could read the text! The light continued night after night until the fungus dried and faded.
Ghost fungus is a gilled basidiomycete mushroom most notable for its bioluminescent properties. The fan- or funnel-shaped fruit bodies are up to 30 cm (12 in) across, with cream-colored caps overlain with shades of orange, brown, purple, or bluish-black. The white or cream gills run down the length of the stipe, which is up to 8 cm (3 in) long and tapers in thickness to the base. The fungus is both saprotrophic and parasitic, and its fruit bodies are generally found growing in overlapping clusters on a wide variety of dead or dying trees.
The reason why the glowing ghost glows is still largely a mystery. Enjoy its bioluminescence!
